The Slow Media Movement: Blog #1 - Media to accompany my morning coffees this week

FT - Goal of limiting warming to 1.5C looks increasingly out of reach, study finds

Yes yes, I know, coffee reads should be more chilled than existential crises. I couldn’t help myself, what can I say.

Overshoot of the Paris target is a possible (and in my opinion, the most likely) scenario. The recent IPCC report has highlighted this eventuality and articles such as this one here are making the conversation more mainstream.

I feel very strongly about this one… we need to acknowledge that we’re on an overshoot trajectory so that we can prepare effectively.

And yes yes, we all know that bad news isn’t what we should be promoting around the climate story, we (global society) are so desensitised to bad news on this topic… but we need to be honest about where we stand against these targets. Especially at government and corporate levels. Let’s stop pretending we have this in hand - with the caveat that we should not forget that most of the needed adaptation and mitigation solutions exist, and that with enough support we can change our trajectory (yes there is hope, we just need to get a wiggle on).

How to remember everything you read

A pretty practical discussion. As the kinda person who folds pages, highlights and constantly takes notes in books I felt very seen.

It links well to the article below around how we can focus on quality > quantity when it comes to ingesting media.

Ultra-Processed Minds - The End of Deep Reading and What It Costs Us

Knowledge is power. That’s always something I’ve lived by. But sometimes there is a reality of there being too much of a good thing… This piece reviews how constantly barraging our minds with information can detract from our ability to really appreciate the individual pieces. Reading has become something of a way of being ‘productive’ - but reading really is beautiful, and we should really stop to smell the roses sometimes and appreciate quality > quantity.

The Art of Personal Taste

A well written exploration of what personal preference in an age of bombardment with trends. The author discusses well how to really find your feet when it comes to taste.

Building on this piece I revisited a variety of materials that explore identity and sense of self. As always this linked back to climate - and I landed back on the Climate Action Venn diagram developed by Ayana Elizabeth Johnson. A beautiful resource.
